Beautiful Mount Washington Lava Glass Vase, Circa 1878-1880
Called Sicilian Ware by Mt Washington, it is commonly called Lava Glass due to the lava or volcanic slag used in its manufacture. It is made of shiny black glass with brightly colored fragments of glass embedded in its surface. It has two reeded handles and measures 5-1/2 inches tall and 4-3/4 inches in maximum diameter. It has a polished pontil on its base and is in excellent condition with no damage. It does have several bubbles in its glass including two shallow open bubbles on its surface just below one of its handles. These are shown in the last picture provided.

One of these is very small and difficult to see. Such bubbles are common in early glass and do not detract from the beauty or value of this rare vase. This is one of the nicest Mt Washington Lava Glass vases we have seen. It has nice form with its two handles and it has more colorful glass fragments than you normally see.

Most of these are still outlined in gold. It will be a great addition to any collection of rare art glass.
