Mount Washington Burmese Tricorner toothpick holder - Spider Mums decoration DESCRIPTION: The Mt. Washington Glass Company originated in Boston in 1837, and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1870. In 1894 it became part of the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, which was famous for its fancy silverplated wares. Washingtons heyday was from the 1880s through the early 1900s, when it made some of the most beautiful art glass ever to come out of an American glass company. One of its most famous products was Burmese glass, which was developed in the 1880s by the companys manager, Frederick Shirley.

Burmese glass was a heat sensitive glass produced by adding gold and uranium to a batch of opal-colored glass. After forming, the pieces were a soft opaque yellow color. These pieces were then partially reheated, causing the heated portions to develop a salmon-tinged pink color.

Most Burmese was further treated by using acid to create a satin finish; however, glossy Burmese pieces were also made. Many pieces of Burmese glass were also hand-decorated with enamel paints and gold, and a few had applied flowers or other decorations in the same Burmese glass.

Washington presented pieces of Burmese glass as gifts to Queen Victoria and to the bride of U. In 1885, Shirley patented the process for creating Burmese glass, and licensed its use to the Thomas Webb & Sons Glass Company in England, which made Burmese in different shapes and with elaborate decorations. This Burmese toothpick holder is often referred to as the tricorner toothpick holder. It has subtle Burmese coloration, with the upper and lower portions yellow, and the center portion pink.

It is graced by a handpainted decoration of yellow and white spider chrysanthemums with green leaves that have a few yellow highlights. Measures approximately 2 inches high, 2-5/8 inches across each of the three folds i.
