RARE AMERICAN YELLOW WARE POTTERY COLANDER 9.5 YELLOWARE c1880-1920
A large and particularly perfect Yellow Ware (Yelloware) Colander. Plain without decorations and no banding around the outside.
No markings on the bottom (which would probably bring it closer to the 1880 date). It measures 9" 1/2 in diameter and 4" 1/4 deep (including the 1/2" foot, which is 4 1/4"in diameter). The bottom of the colander includes 20 holes arranged in a snowflake pattern and there are a series of holes arranged in diamonds around the side of the bowl, towards the bottom all of these holes appear to have been hand drilled or pushed given the irregular spacing and lack of straight lines. There are also two drilled holes near the top edge, presumably for a string to hang the piece with in the kitchen which I added.
The Calander is in superb condition with no chips/cracks/breaks. It rings like a bell when snapped with your finger and at most, there are some very faint glaze lines on the bottom, and a very tiny and faint line about 1 long down from the top edge (visible only at certain angles, and it does not appear to go through the pottery, that is, it is only visible on the side of the bowl). A very similar example of an unbranded American Yelloware Colander can be found on p. 54 of the Collectors Guide to Yellow Ware. An Identification and Value Guide, by Lisa S.Yellow Ware colanders are exceedingly rare, and when you do find them, they are chipped and cracked, etc. This example is about as nice as you will run across.
