Rare STEUBEN Plum Jade Art Glass Lamp c. 1920, Chinese Pagoda by Frederick Carder

This beautifully etched lamp was made by Frederick Carder. Who worked for the Steuben company for 30 years. Starting in 1903, he created designs and unique glass colors with his chemistry background.

A large collection of his work is owned by the Rockwell Museum, and is on loan to the Corning Museum of Glass. There is quite a bit of information online if one looks up the Carder Steuben Club.

Although I found similar shapes and designs, I did not find another lamp exactly like it. Rarely did I find the Plum Jade color. Every part of this appears to be absolutely original with the exception of the cord. It must have been rewired in the past 30 years or so. I would use it as it is and feel quite safe about the wiring, but that choice will be up to the owner.

Stunning because of the color changes of the Plum Jade glass, it appears black, then hit by the sun it lights up with a beautiful purple. Although it is described as "etched, " it is deeper than what I would expect from an etching. It appears carved to me, and indeed he used both techniques. The base is solid brass, as are the top pieces. Underneath it appears the glass was actually situated on the base when it was hot. There is some melting into the openings. It is not signed, but he did not sign his pieces. Research shows this was shape #6228 with a design referred to as either "Chinese" or Pagoda. Three of the scenes surround the sides. It measures 15" from the base to the top of the brass leaves, and 29.25" to the top of the finial. The glass itself is about 5.25" at it's widest and 11.5" tall. It does not come with a shade. I believe this is a chance to own a museum worthy piece. If one does a search for images with the words Frederick Carder Glass Lamps, there will be several that have certain recognizable similarities.
