Steuben Glassworks Amethyst Kuan Yin Flower Frog
This fairly rare and unusual flower frog was made by Steuben Glassworks (Steuben County) in Corning, New York. It was designed by Frederick Carder an English born glassmaker who came to New York in 1903. He started Steuben Glassworks with Thomas Hawkes. Corning Glass Works bought the company after a few years but he stayed on until 1932. The model #7133 of this piece dates it to somewhere around 1930.

Steuben stopped using colored glass after Carder left. Often referred to as simply an oriental lady it is actually a representation of Kuan Yin , a spiritual figure associated with Buddhism and Taoism in a multitude of East Asian countries.

She is known by a number of names with spelling variations depending on which country and their language. In China she is called Guangyin and is the subject for a recently completed statue which stands at over 450 tall. She is a bodhisattva in the Buddhist religion. The figure stands 9 high (22.7 cm) when mounted on the base. The base alone stands 2 tall and is about 4 ½ wide (5.1 cm x 11.4 cm).

The same base was used for a number of figures and holds a 1921 patent #59,186. The base is double tiered with a center hole for the figures unpolished peg, encircled by 8 holes on each tier for flower stems. The figure is perfect and aside for some (not unusual) chips and roughness around the hole for the peg, the base is in wonderful shape. When the figure is in situ, any damage is covered.

Designed by a master and produced in a wonderful color this is definitely a great piece for a collector. Please inquire for any exact dimension.

Note: The term flower frog is used since it has become the most commonly used term to describe this type of floral arrangement device; this despite the fact that the term was adopted well after most of the items were produced. Other terms are used around the world such as flower (or floral) block, holder, aid, dome, insert, arranger, and others.

Often, use of a term for a flower frog is unimportant or secondary to a name for all the pieces of a set used to display floral arrangements such as a console, centerpiece, or float bowl (typically Australian) set. I have collected flower frogs from around the world for over fifteen years. It is past time to downsize and simplify my life, a plan heartily endorsed by my wife. Please contact me with any problems before leaving feedback. Policies and methods vary by nation.

I will pay for any higher value coverage. Should a claim arise (lost or damaged item), the claims are typically handled within 7 to 10 days. To begin claim process simply contact me and I will handle it from there. Carrier retains right to inspect item and packaging prior to paying claim.

There are times that I cannot. Items need to be packaged carefully for protection.

If items include separate parts, each part will have to be wrapped individually bubble wrap, etc. As an example, a glass or pottery/porcelain console set may consist of a two or three part flower frog and a bowl (maybe candlesticks as well). The space needed for packing parts separately is far greater than the space taken up when parts are assembled for use/display.

Even within the carriers limits, it doesnt make sense to pack too many fragile items in one box if it increases the chance of it being mishandled or dropped. If you are purchasing a quantity of smaller flower frog rounds, or the like, then Im all for getting as many safely packed in a box as is reasonable. Since they are typically glass or pottery ceramics, porcelain, etc. They will by nature have age appropriate wear and dirt.

There are characteristics of production and age that I cannot be expected to fully disclose. Examples would be straw marks and bubbles in glass items and glaze skips, pops and bubbles in pottery. There are more such characteristic you should expect to find on these types of items. The pictures are part of the listing and should be viewed carefully for an idea of overall condition.

The pictures were taken with a very good camera and may actually highlight defects more noticeably than when viewing in person.
