The Union Glass Company was established in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1851 and subsequently closed in 1924. Along with the production of pressed and silvered glass, Union Glass Company was also responsible for Kew Blas glassware.
The Kew Blas brand was created for a line of iridescent glass produced from 1890 to 1924. The name is a scrambled spelling of the name of the factory manager at the time, W. The vase has a circular hollow base with a long thin stem leading up to a bulb-like bowl which has a flared rim. It has a very unique, lightly textured surface which kind of gives it an organic feel. Gold in color with beautiful hints of purple iridescent hues.
It has a polished pontil on the bottom side which is properly signed'KEW-Blas'. It is a large example measuring approx. 12ΒΌ tall by 5 at widest. The vase is in excellent condition, free of any chips, cracks or repairs with very light age related wear.
Upon close inspection, we did notice what appears to be a piece of pencil? Two inches long in the bottom. We tried to gently "jiggle" it out with no success... Decided to just leave it as is - very hard to see without holding it up to a bright light. This beautiful glass is reminiscent of prominent makers such as Tiffany, Quezal or Stueben and sitting next to a piece of either, it is extremely comparable.
